Mapping Human–Computer Interaction Research Themes and Trends from Its Existence to Today: A Topic Modeling-Based Review of past 60 Years

Fatih Gurcan K. Cagiltay N. Cagiltay

Abstrak

ABSTRACT As it covers a wide spectrum, the research literature of human-computer interaction (HCI) studies has a rich and multi-disciplinary content where there are limited studies demonstrating the big picture of the field. Such an analysis provides researchers with a better understanding of the field, revealing current issues, challenges, and potential research gaps. This study aims to explore the research trends in the developmental stages of the HCI studies over the past 60 years. Automated text mining with probabilistic topic modeling has been used to analyze 41,720 journal articles that are indexed by the SCOPUS database between 1957 and 2018. The results of this study reveal 21 major topics mapping the research landscape of HCI. By extending the discovered topics beyond a snapshot, the topics were analyzed considering their developmental stages, volume, and accelerations to provide a panoramic view that shows the increase and decrease of trends over time. In this context, the transition of HCI studies from machine-oriented systems to human-oriented systems indicates its future direction toward context-aware adaptive systems.

Abstract The Interaction Era is evolving and extending to the Human-Computer Integration Era, in which the relationship between humans and technologies is characterized as a partnership. Motivated by this evolution, we conducted a Systematic Literature Review to present the current state of knowledge about the emerging paradigm of Human-Computer Integration (HInt), as well as its opportunities and challenges for the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) area. As a result, we organize the existing knowledge and research on HInt which describes it as a new interaction paradigm. Our findings indicate that HInt is a topic of growing interest in the HCI Community, and provide an overview of existing initiatives and key research gaps on HInt within the HCI scope. As contributions, our results are useful to (1) expand the HCI community’s knowledge regarding this emerging paradigm and (2) stimulate new initiatives and contributions to the consolidation and evolution of the HCI with a lens on HInt.

examples highlight, implications from a single study may span a variety of levels and types of potential impact. Here, we present seven types of implications commonly encountered in HCI research and outline the specific aspects that reinforce their impact. The purpose of authors in raising an implication is to highlight and summarize to the reader what to do with the insights presented in a paper or report. By being explicit in the intended implications of a scientific article, we pursue three distinct goals. First, to support the readers of HCI articles or UX reports to clearly identify different takeaways. Additionally, this assists in The field of human-computer interaction covers a broad set of methods, viewpoints, and application areas. While the real-world impact of our research is typically impossible to predict, HCI researchers generally seek for their work to have implications that go beyond an individual paper. For example, a study on the use of datalogging tools by hospital staff can provide design implications for patient information systems. A paper on privacy on the Web might provide policy implications on the regulation of tracking technologies. Finally, an analysis of methodological flaws in published papers can provide new analysis guidelines with implications for T Implications of HumanComputer Interaction Research Niels van Berkel, Aalborg University Kasper Hornbæk, University of Copenhagen

Detecting Latent Topics and Trends in Software Engineering Research Since 1980 Using Probabilistic Topic Modeling

The landscape of software engineering research has changed significantly from one year to the next in line with industrial needs and trends. Therefore, today’s research literature on software engineering has a rich and multidisciplinary content that includes a large number of studies; however, not many of them demonstrate a holistic view of the field. From this perspective, this study aimed to reveal a holistic view that reflects topics, trends, and trajectories in software engineering research by analyzing the majority of domain-specific articles published over the last 40 years. This study first presents an objective and systematic method for corpus creation through major publication sources in the field. A corpus was then created using this method, which includes 44 domain-specific conferences and journals and 57,174 articles published between 1980 and 2019. Next, this corpus was analyzed using an automated text-mining methodology based on a probabilistic topic-modeling approach. As a result of this analysis, 24 main topics were found. In addition, topical trends in the field were revealed. Finally, three main developmental stages of the field were identified as: the programming age, the software development age, and the software optimization age.

In this chapter, we review and discuss the transformation of AI technology in HCI/UX work and assess how AI technology will change how we do the work. We first discuss how AI can be used to enhance the result of user research and design evaluation. We then discuss how AI technology can be used to enhance HCI/UX design. Finally, we discuss how AI-enabled capabilities can improve UX when users interact with computing systems, applications, and services.

Dispensing with Humans in Human-Computer Interaction Research

Machine Learning models have become more advanced than could have been supposed even a few years ago, often surpassing human performance on many tasks. Large language models (LLM) can produce text indistinguishable from human-produced text. This begs the question, how necessary are humans - even for tasks where humans appear indispensable? Qualitative Analysis (QA) is integral to human-computer interaction research, requiring both human-produced data and human analysis of that data to illuminate human opinions about and experiences with technology. We use GPT-3 and ChatGPT to replace human analysis and then to dispense with human-produced text altogether. We find GPT-3 is capable of automatically identifying themes and generating nuanced analyses of qualitative data arguably similar to those written by human researchers. We also briefly ponder philosophical implications of this research.
