A Survey on ML4VIS: Applying Machine Learning Advances to Data Visualization

Zhutian Chen Qianwen Wang Yong Wang + 1 penulis

Abstrak

Inspired by the great success of machine learning (ML), researchers have applied ML techniques to visualizations to achieve a better design, development, and evaluation of visualizations. This branch of studies, known as ML4VIS, is gaining increasing research attention in recent years. To successfully adapt ML techniques for visualizations, a structured understanding of the integration of ML4VIS is needed. In this article, we systematically survey 88 ML4VIS studies, aiming to answer two motivating questions: “what visualization processes can be assisted by ML?” and “how ML techniques can be used to solve visualization problems? ”This survey reveals seven main processes where the employment of ML techniques can benefit visualizations: Data Processing4VIS, Data-VIS Mapping, Insight Communication, Style Imitation, VIS Interaction, VIS Reading, and User Profiling. The seven processes are related to existing visualization theoretical models in an ML4VIS pipeline, aiming to illuminate the role of ML-assisted visualization in general visualizations. Meanwhile, the seven processes are mapped into main learning tasks in ML to align the capabilities of ML with the needs in visualization. Current practices and future opportunities of ML4VIS are discussed in the context of the ML4VIS pipeline and the ML-VIS mapping. While more studies are still needed in the area of ML4VIS, we hope this article can provide a stepping-stone for future exploration. AI4VIS: Survey on Artificial Intelligence Approaches for Data Visualization

Visualizations themselves have become a data format. Akin to other data formats such as text and images, visualizations are increasingly created, stored, shared, and (re-)used with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. In this survey, we probe the underlying vision of formalizing visualizations as an emerging data format and review the recent advance in applying AI techniques to visualization data (AI4VIS). We define visualization data as the digital representations of visualizations in computers and focus on data visualization (e.g., charts and infographics). We build our survey upon a corpus spanning ten different fields in computer science with an eye toward identifying important common interests. Our resulting taxonomy is organized around WHAT is visualization data and its representation, WHY and HOW to apply AI to visualization data. We highlight a set of common tasks that researchers apply to the visualization data and present a detailed discussion of AI approaches developed to accomplish those tasks. Drawing upon our literature review, we discuss several important research questions surrounding the management and exploitation of visualization data, as well as the role of AI in support of those processes. We make the list of surveyed papers and related material available online at.

Steerable Self-Driving Data Visualization

In this work, we present a self-driving data visualization system, called DeepEye, that automatically generates and recommends visualizations based on the idea of visualization by examples. We propose effective visualization recognition techniques to decide which visualizations are meaningful and visualization ranking techniques to rank the good visualizations. Furthermore, a main challenge of automatic visualization system is that the users may be misled by blindly suggesting visualizations without knowing the user's intent. To this end, we extend DeepEye to be easily steerable by allowing the user to use keyword search and providing click-based faceted navigation. Empirical results, using real-life data and use cases, verify the power of our proposed system.

Challenges and Opportunities in Data Visualization Education: A Call to Action

This paper is a call to action for research and discussion on data visualization education. As visualization evolves and spreads through our professional and personal lives, we need to understand how to support and empower a broad and diverse community of learners in visualization. Data Visualization is a diverse and dynamic discipline that combines knowledge from different fields, is tailored to suit diverse audiences and contexts, and frequently incorporates tacit knowledge. This complex nature leads to a series of interrelated challenges for data visualization education. Driven by a lack of consolidated knowledge, overview, and orientation for visualization education, the 21 authors of this paper—educators and researchers in data visualization—identify and describe 19 challenges informed by our collective practical experience. We organize these challenges around seven themes People, Goals & Assessment, Environment, Motivation, Methods, Materials, and Change. Across these themes, we formulate 43 research questions to address these challenges. As part of our call to action, we then conclude with 5 cross-cutting opportunities and respective action items: embrace DIVERSITY+INCLUSION, build COMMUNITIES, conduct RESEARCH, act AGILE, and relish RESPONSIBILITY. We aim to inspire researchers, educators and learners to drive visualization education forward and discuss why, how, who and where we educate, as we learn to use visualization to address challenges across many scales and many domains in a rapidly changing world: viseducationchallenges.github.io.

A Comprehensive State-of-the-Art Survey on Data Visualization Tools: Research Developments, Challenges and Future Domain Specific Visualization Framework

Data visualization is a powerful skill for the demonstration of meaningful data insights in an interactive and effective way. In this survey article, we collected 70 articles from last five years (2017-2022) to identify, classify, and investigate the various scopes, aspects and theories of data visualization. We also investigated the powerful applications of data visualization in various domains and fields such as visualization apps for health sector, Internet of things (IoTs), business dashboards, urban traffic management, smart buildings and environmental data visualization. However, after thorough investigation and classification, we conclude that, a comprehensive study is still missing about interactive, effective and efficient data visualization survey explaining basic current state-of-the-art best interactive visualization techniques, web-based tools and platforms, best performance theories, data structures and algorithms. In this survey article, we perform a thorough investigation to fill the gap on theoretical, analytical, statistical models and techniques for improving the performance of visualization. Current primary and domain specific future challenges are also reviewed, and related future research directions and opportunities are recommended.

Reaching Broader Audiences With Data Visualization

The visualization research community can and should reach broader audiences beyond data-savvy groups of people, because these audiences could also greatly benefit from visual access to data. In this article, we discuss four research topics—personal data visualization, data visualization on mobile devices, inclusive data visualization, and multimodal interaction for data visualization—that, individually and collaboratively, would help us reach broader audiences with data visualization, making data more accessible.
