Feelings of Being for Mobile User Experience Design

A. Dirin T. Laine M. Nieminen

Abstrak

Abstract Creating emotionally engaging mobile applications requires consideration of constantly evolving technology, content richness, usability, and user experience (UX). UX plays an important role in promoting long-term usage. We focused on the emotional aspects of UX design of mobile applications. In particular, we adopted the concept of feelings of being (FoB) – also known as existential feelings – in the context of mobile UX design. We presented an in-depth literature review covering 112 articles (2005–2021) on human-computer interaction, UX, mobile application development, mobile learning, and emotional engagement. Of these articles, 16 discussed FoB in the context of mobile applications. Building on the results of literature analysis and other previous research, we presented a FoB model for mobile application design comprising 13 FoB (ownership, engagement, contribution, security, trust, adjustability, enjoyment, empowerment, effectiveness, frustration, excitement, gratification, and needs fulfilment) and the hedonic and eudaimonic aspects of UX. Finally, we validated the FoB model through nine design projects, proposed design recommendations based on the model, and presented considerations on extending the model with additional elements.

Preliminary Emotional User Experience Model for Mobile Augmented Reality Application Design: A Kansei Engineering Approach

The user experience, often known as UX, is the key factor in determining a product success and increase user’s acquisition. However, this field of research lacks conceptual and practical models to follow when designing pervasive technologies such as mobile augmented reality (MAR). To convey a pleasant UX, it is necessary to identify the contributing factor and the components that influence the enhancement of the MAR design. The findings of the study indicated that emotions are the main factor that drives the user’s perception and hence, their choice and pleasure. This paper presents a preliminary model for designing an emotional UX mobile augmented reality application with the use of Kansei engineering approach. Ultimately, this model will provide insight into the design fundamentals that influence the user experiences. The outcomes of this study will assist researchers and designers in shaping the emotional user experience design.

A Proposed Methodology for Enhancing User Experience in Mobile Applications Design for Cultural Promotion

User Experience (UX), as a theoretical and practical field of research, is based on the theory of Human Computer Interaction (HCI), studies systems, products, and services in the field of (mainly) Information Technology (IT), and aims at user satisfaction and better, more pleasant and more efficient interaction with systems. The popularity of Mobile Device Applications (MDAs) in the last decade has introduced new interaction environments and thus the need to formulate, develop and adapt to them, theories, and methods of UX. We present UX as a theoretical and practical framework and record its methodology - both the general one for various systems so far, and the specific one for Mobile Device Applications and more specifically for those that project cultural content in conventional ways and through augmentation. As part of the research, high-fidelity prototypes were designed and were tested during a user survey (usability test, questionnaire) for extracting conclusions to improve the design of the application.

The Influence of UX Design on User Retention and Conversion Rates in Mobile Apps

This paper explores the profound impact of User Experience (UX) design on user retention and conversion rates in mobile applications. As the mobile app market becomes increasingly competitive, understanding how UX design can enhance user satisfaction, engagement, and loyalty is crucial for developers and businesses. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and statistical insights, this study identifies key UX design principles that contribute to improved user retention and conversion rates. Intuitive navigation, appealing visuals, performance optimization, and integration of user feedback emerge as essential components of effective UX design that drive app success. Applications that prioritize these elements foster a positive user experience, leading to higher engagement and greater retention. Additionally, UX design strategies, such as personalization and customization, have been shown to significantly increase conversion rates, demonstrating the critical the role that tailored experiences play in app success. By analyzing these principles and their impact, this paper provides valuable insights for developers aiming to enhance user satisfaction, optimize app performance, and ultimately improve business outcomes.

Design for Wellbeing – Methods and Strategies for Supporting Psychological Needs in User Experience

Dorian Peters R. Calvo

8 Mei 2021

While leading technology companies have created “digital wellbeing” initiatives in response to public concern over psychological impacts, these largely focus on changing human behavior (eg, via self-tracking and ‘screen time’ restriction) rather than on changing technology. If respect for human wellbeing is to become a genuine priority with measurable impact, then technology will need to change too. Designers are in a position to lead this change by integrating wellbeing psychology into design practice. This course will equip technology-makers with research-based knowledge and skills for practicing “wellbeing supportive design”, and for improving UX across the board by supporting psychological health.

FROM THE DEFINITION OF USER EXPERIENCE TO A FRAMEWORK TO CLASSIFY ITS APPLICATIONS IN DESIGN

Abstract The concept of User Experience (UX) dates back to the 1990s, but a shared definition of UX is not available. As design integrates UX, different interpretations thereof can complicate the possibility to build upon previous literature and develop the field autonomously. Indeed, by analysing the literature, UX emerges as a cauldron of related and closely linked concepts. However, it is possible to find recurring attributes that emerge from those definitions, which are ascribable to two foci: the fundamental elements of the interaction (user, system, context) and typologies of experience (ergonomic, cognitive, and emotional). Those are used to build a framework. We have preliminarily investigated how UX is dealt with in design by mapping a sample of UX-related experimental articles published in design journals. We classified UX case studies based on the framework to individuate the UXs that emerge most frequently and the most studied ones in the design field. The two-focus framework allows the mapping of experiments involving UX in design, without highlighting specific favorable combinations. However, comprehensive studies dealing with all elements and UX typologies have not been found.
