How Virtual Reality Technology Has Changed Our Lives: An Overview of the Current and Potential Applications and Limitations

Abstrak

Despite virtual reality (VR) being initially marketed toward gaming, there are many potential and existing VR applications in various sectors and fields, including education, training, simulations, and even in exercise and healthcare. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of general understanding of the strengths and limitations of VR as a technology in various application domains. Therefore, the aim of this literature review is to contribute to the library of literature concerning VR technology, its applications in everyday use, and some of its existing drawbacks. Key VR applications were discussed in terms of how they are currently utilized or can be utilized in the future, spanning fields such as medicine, engineering, education, and entertainment. The main benefits of VR are expressed through the text, followed by a discussion of some of the main limitations of current VR technologies and how they can be mitigated or improved. Overall, this literature review shows how virtual reality technology has the potential to be a greatly beneficial tool in a multitude of applications and a wide variety of fields. VR as a technology is still in its early stages, but more people are becoming interested in it and are optimistic about seeing what kind of changes VR can make in their everyday lives. With how rapidly modern society has adapted to personal computers and smartphones, VR has the opportunity to become the next big technological turning point that will eventually become commonplace in most households.

Impact of Virtual Reality Cognitive and Motor Exercises on Brain Health

Innovative technologies of the 21st century have an extremely significant impact on all activities of modern humans. Among them, virtual reality (VR) offers great opportunities for scientific research and public health. The results of research to date both demonstrate the beneficial effects of using virtual worlds, and indicate undesirable effects on bodily functions. This review presents interesting recent findings related to training/exercise in virtual environments and its impact on cognitive and motor functions. It also highlights the importance of VR as an effective tool for assessing and diagnosing these functions both in research and modern medical practice. The findings point to the enormous future potential of these rapidly developing innovative technologies. Of particular importance are applications of virtual reality in basic and clinical neuroscience.

A scoping review to assess the effects of virtual reality in medical education and clinical care

Due to the challenges and restrictions posed by COVID-19 pandemic, technology and digital solutions played an important role in the rendering of necessary healthcare services, notably in medical education and clinical care. The aim of this scoping review was to analyze and sum up the most recent developments in Virtual Reality (VR) use for therapeutic care and medical education, with a focus on training medical students and patients. We identified 3743 studies, of which 28 were ultimately selected for the review. The search strategy followed the most recent Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis for scoping review (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. 11 studies (39.3%) in the field of medical education assessed different domains, such as knowledge, skills, attitudes, confidence, self-efficacy, and empathy. 17 studies (60.7%) focused on clinical care, particularly in the areas of mental health, and rehabilitation. Among these, 13 studies also investigated user experiences and feasibility in addition to clinical outcomes. Overall, the findings of our review reported considerable improvements in terms of medical education and clinical care. VR systems were also found to be safe, engaging, and beneficial by the studies’ participants. There were huge variations in studies with respect to the study designs, VR contents, devices, evaluation methods, and treatment periods. In the future, studies may focus on creating definitive guidelines that can help in improving patient care further. Hence, there is an urgent need for researchers to collaborate with the VR industry and healthcare professionals to foster a better understanding of contents and simulation development.

The Present and Future of Virtual Reality in Medical Education: A Narrative Review

Virtual reality (VR) uses computer-generated and three-dimensional environments to create immersive experiences through the use of interactive devices that simulate virtual environments in many forms, such as 3D, screen-based, or room-based. Users can engage in the environment with objects, characters, and scenes, making individuals assume they are experiencing a real-life scenario. VR has been adopted across medical and nursing fields to supplement clinically relevant and practical teaching. However, the effectiveness of this interactive form of learning has come a long way with improvements in accessibility, cost, and technicalities. The immersive simulated environment that VR has to offer today initially began with screen-based learning and then the 360-video method. These previously sought-out methods were eventually found to disconnect the students from engaging in the learning environment that present-day VR systems are designed to provide. Interactive VR offers a dynamic platform for medical training. These simulations benefit the learner by allowing them to interact within case scenarios and virtual wards, as well as with patients, colleagues, and relatives. To mimic real-life encounters, the student can take a patient’s history and physical exam, investigate, diagnose, and provide treatment. The simulated patient can express emotions, concerns, and signs of a poor state of health. All these factors play into a healthcare provider’s competency to think critically and clinically in decision-making. This practice is now being used in many surgical programs and medical education curricula. The use of simulation in VR is continuously being proven to decrease injury, increase operation speed, and improve overall outcomes in patient-centered care. VR simulation differs from in-person simulation training in that the VR modality of learning is more accessible and replicable than the latter. By comparing research studies and reviews of medical programs that incorporated VR into their curricula, we were able to assess the state of VR in medical education and where this technology could lead to future implementation in medical programs. Our review aimed to give insight into the existing evidence, the gaps in the use of VR in medical education, and the potential benefits this modality of learning can have going forward in this field of study. Medical students have demonstrated significantly enhanced knowledge gain when using immersive interactive VR over screen-based learning. Given the improvements in students’ performance due to these dynamic and collaborative learning experiences, immersive VR training will become a standard in the development of clinical skills and ensure patient safety. Although the emphasis on empathy began later in the journey of gaining VR as a part of medical education, there is a need to gain those skills as early as possible in medical school. Implementing the use of VR as a supplement in medical education allows students to practice simulated patient encounters along with an array of different academic endeavors. By doing so, students will gain competency and confidence as they encounter patients during their clinical rotations and clinical practice.

Evaluating the effectiveness of virtual reality for safety-relevant training: a systematic review

The commercial release of affordable, low-cost, and consumer-ready virtual reality (VR) devices has increased the accessibility for researchers to investigate the benefits of VR technology including those aimed at education and training. VR technology provides several opportunities that may provide benefits over traditional training methods, this is particularly relevant for safety training due to its ability to safely simulate dangerous scenarios that would otherwise be difficult to access. When implementing a new technology, it is important to evaluate and validate its effectiveness. This paper presents a systematic review of VR safety-relevant training studies that perform an evaluation of their effectiveness. This comprehensive review includes 136 studies published between 2016 and August 2021. Results presented in this paper include application domains, study objectives, study designs, and evaluation measures. Results show that the majority of studies were applicable to health services with the majority focusing on effectiveness evaluation using true- or quasi-experimental design. This study then categorizes each reported evaluation measure into one of the four levels in Kirkpatrick’s model for training evaluation, results showed that the majority of studies evaluated learning (72.06%) and reaction (66.18%) levels with very few studies evaluating behavior and results levels. This study concludes by providing insights and recommendations to help future researchers make informed decisions when designing an effectiveness evaluation study for VR safety-relevant training applications.

A Scoping Review of Augmented/Virtual Reality Health and Wellbeing Interventions for Older Adults: Redefining Immersive Virtual Reality

Augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) technologies are regularly used in psychology research to complement psychological interventions and to enable an individual to feel as if they are in an environment other than that of their immediate surroundings. A scoping review was performed to identify how AR/VR was being used with older adult populations to impact their physical and mental health. The review also sought to determine whether the terminology used in AR/VR research was consistent. The results show that 65 studies have been published in the last 20 years that meet the inclusion criteria (virtual/augmented reality) technology to impact older adults’ physical/mental health and wellbeing. Participants included healthy, physically, and cognitively impaired, and emotionally vulnerable older adults. We argue that over 70% of the studies included in this review were mislabeled as VR and only six papers included fully immersive VR/AR. The remaining studies use less immersive variants of virtual reality with their populations, and only one study made use of AR, which prompted the suggestion of a new definition for virtual reality. This paper also calls for an updated taxonomy of augmented and virtual reality definitions to address the lack of consistency found in studies that identify themselves as AR/VR when they are using less immersive technical set-ups, including displaying non-interactive videos on 2D screens.
